A serious accusation between candidates is heating up the race for the 9th Congressional District.  Both candidates continue to accuse each other of playing dirty.

The most recent to come out is a harassment charge against candidate Art Halvorson (D).  State police in Uniontown, Fayette County documented the incident happened on August 6th at the county fair.

Meghan Boocks, 22, a field staffer for incumbent Bill Shuster’s (R) campaign, reported to authorities at the fair and state police Art Halvorson grabbed her wrist tightly.

Shuster’s campaign manager, Casey Contres, gave some details.  He said Boocks was scared of Halvorson who asked her who she worked for and said to tell Shuster he was going to crush him.

Contres sent the following statement:

“First we want to say that we are proud of Meghan and her family for persevering through this incident and for having the strength to come forward.  This is a serious charge, and we will continue to support Meghan.

This incident and the charges filed by the State Police that have stemmed from it are yet another troubling area of Art Halvorson’s record. To think that he thought it was alright to aggressively lay hands on a young campaign worker shows that he is unfit to serve in Congress.  Grabbing this young woman and trying to intimidate her is the most disappointing incident to date.  Art Halvorson and his campaign’s continues attempts to harass this woman in the media since the charges were filed are disturbing and need to stop.

Also contrary to what Halvorson is now saying, this young woman brought this incident to the attention of both state police and the fair security the night it happened.”

Halvorson said the accusation and charges are false.  He explained he went to the table and asked who the campaign manager was.  “I stayed behind the table,” he said.  “They stayed in their chair.  I never even shook their hands.  They never stood up.  There was absolutely no physical contact.  So when we discovered a few days later that they had gone to the security people at the fair and filed a complaint with the security guards, we were obviously surprised by that because it was a fabricated story.”

Halvorson said he plead not guilty and is waiting for his hearing.

Contres and Halvorson both laughed when pointed out that both sides seem to play dirtier the as election day nears.
