Police released the following statement after a number of calls about a computer scam

Warning, Computer fraud scam recently victimizing numerous citizens. Above is the picture that will be displayed on the computer screen.

Recently Logan Township Police had had reports of victims turning on their computer and displayed on the screen is a warning message that made it look like it is from Microsoft. It warns that the computer has security damage, that a suspicious connection was trying to access their logins, banking details and tracking his internet activity. There are other warnings included in this message and it displays the phone # 1-877-540-7540 for customer support. Once you call the number the person again repeats the same message and tells the victim that they can remotely fix the computer for a fee. They give detailed instructions/steps on how to give them remote access to the computer so that they can supposedly fix the problem. Once the problem is supposedly fixed they then obtain the victims credit card number and charge them a fee. They will make multiple frauds on the same victims over a period of months. Once a victim becomes suspicious and refuses to pay or tell them they are calling the police and they hang up and lock teh victims computer, making it inoperable.

The company sending this message represents itself as Go Assist Customer Support. Google search revealed that Go To Assist Fast Support is a fraud and one of the sites stated the following: They tell the victim that they have detected a serious issue with their computer and would like to correct the issue for them. Most people are weary of this and do not take them up on the offer but sometimes it works. Once connected the scammer will look for information to steal, possibly install malware/spyware on the victim’s computer and charge them a fee to fix the problem. When in fact they are installing malware or spyware that is then scheduled in time release intervals to make the victims computer start working improperly. They then send them the message their computer is at risk.

If you have a problem with your computer it is best to take it to local Computer Repair Shops for assistance. If you give anyone remote access to your computer, make certain that they are a legitimate company.
