A Catholic church in DuBois could soon get much quieter on Sundays.
A pastor at a nearby church, Fr. Richard Siefer, says the Diocese of Erie did a pastoral planning program for almost two years and now wants only one pastor in DuBois instead of two.
St. Joseph’s would merge with St. Catherine of Siena, and also become a “partner parish” with St. Michael’s, with one parish office and one pastoral council, Siefer said.
St. Joseph’s would lose its one service.
“That church would be open. It would be available for weddings and funerals of folks who belonged to St. Joseph’s, but there would be no Sunday mass and probably not even a weekday mass,” says Siefer, from St. Catharine’s.
Siefer says the bishop will announce his final plan in September and then the churches will have until next February to make adjustments.
He says other churches in the Diocese of Erie will also be affected in the area-wide restructuring that has been discussed for two years.
