An 11-year-old boy was killed Monday when he was hit by a car waiting for his bus in Summit Township, Butler County.
Police say the car also hit his two siblings, who were flown to a hospital.
According to officials, the car stopped at a nearby stop sign then turned right onto the street where the children were waiting. It’s believed a glare from the sun may have prevented the driver from seeing the group.
Officers do not believe the driver did anything wrong.
One witness said the kids were waiting in a very dangerous spot. “As I passed, I realized it was a boy laying on his backpack and I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a horrible place for them to wait for the bus.'” When asked if she thought it was safe, Kiara Oesterling replied “No. Not at all. I wondered why they were there instead of across at their house.”
Officials say their house is about 50 feet away from the area they were standing.
Butler Area School District Superintendent released a statement saying in part, “Anytime a student passes it is devastating and it impacts our entire school community.” He added, “On behalf of the entire school community we extend our deepest sympathy to the students’ family and friends at this difficult time.”
