Chelsea Clinton addressed local issues such as the opioid crisis and energy sector jobs in her visit to the University of Pittsburgh in Johnstown.

On the opioid crisis, Chelsea says that her mother knows how much it affects Central Pennsylvania. She said, “I know that here in this county it is one of the hardest hit areas across the state and really across the country. This is a public health and a moral crisis and my mom believes the federal government needs to do a few things, quickly.”

Chelsea outlined some of the things that her mom thinks needs to be done to address this issue. She explained, “One, invest in prevention programs in partnership with high schools, colleges, with big employers. And two, provide funding to clinics and hospitals so that anyone that wants treatment can get treatment.”

When talking about transitioning jobs in the energy sector to renewable energy, Chelsea says that the plan is to continue to invest in the same communities saying, “This is exactly where we should be investing to build solar panels and windmills. This is exactly where we should be leveraging amazing work from steel workers and the other unions that have helped our country be strong and help build a strong middle class.”

She went on to say that the country needs to value the workers in these industries and communities. She continued, “We need to be valuing hard work, we need to be valuing communities that have helped build our country and continue to invest in the same way they’ve always invested in us.”

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will debate Monday night at Hofstra University.
