Certain wet, canned cat food are being recalled due to low levels of Thiamine (Vitamin B1).

The J.M. Smucker Company announced a recall today of specific lots of 9Lives® Protein Plus® wet, canned cat food due to possible low levels of Vitamin B1. No illnesses have been reported at this time. The product is being recalled as a precaution.

Cats who are fed diets low in Vitamin B1 for several weeks may be at risk for developing Vitamin B1 deficiency. Symptoms of deficiency can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature.

Early signs can include decreased appetite, weight loss, vomiting, salivation, and failure to grow. Advanced symptoms may include blindness, mental dullness, bending towards the floor, wobbly walking, falling, circling, seizures, and sudden death.

If your cat is displaying any of these symptoms, you’re encouraged to talk to talk to your veterinarian. If treated early, Vitamin B1 is typically reversible.
