Crews were on the scene of a brush fire for five hours in East Taylor Township, Cambria County. The fire broke out shortly after noon Wednesday. The hillside was destroyed, but as of 5:30 p.m. crews had everything under control and reopened Route 271.
Emergency responders said nine fire departments were on the scene Wednesday afternoon. Some of those departments posted to social media asking folks to stay away from the area. They also said that the wind conditions played a factor in spreading the fire quickly.
911 dispatch told WTAJ they were not able to do an aerial attack because no units were available.
As for the local school district, Conemaugh Valley, we spoke with the superintendent. He told us that the school and their students were not in any danger, only one bus route was expected to be affected. CamTran also posted to social media saying that they were detouring bus routes for their passengers.
Route 271 has been reopened.
