A Ridgway official says the problem with brown-colored water is over, but not before it stained the YMCA pool recently.
Borough manager Paul McCurdy says it happened when the YMCA re-filled its pool over Labor Day weekend.
The council then voted at a recent meeting to refund half of a water bill for the YMCA, totaling about $900.
“When they added the chlorine to the levels you need for swimming pool safety, that reacted with the manganese and precipitated manganese,” says McCurdy. “There was colored water then in the pool. The colored water formed while the water was in the pool.”
Firefighters then shuttled some water from the nearby community pool to help.
McCurdy says the borough is now getting a DEP permit for chlorine dioxide to hopefully keep the water clear when the weather heats up again next summer.
