A DuBois woman says a home-renovation project turned into a nightmare.

We have more on the dispute that has her contractor facing theft charges.

Police say in the complaint that the contractor charged the woman for $21,000 of work that he didn’t complete.

“It’s been a terrible, emotional thing for our whole family,” says homeowner Kim Lee.

Lee wanted to fix up her home of 20 years. She says during a shopping trip she ran into an old friend.

“We wanted the upstairs renovated, the bathroom and the bedrooms and things just kind of got out of hand,” says Lee.

She says the house turned into a big mess, and soon Charles Johnson Jr., 58, DuBois, was talking only to her daughter or sending texts.

“We were left without the power. We were left without electric. We were left without water,” says Lee.

“I’m doing what I need to to resolve the issue because personally I don’t like these charges being brought against me when they’re false,” says Johnson.

The complaint says Chuck Johnson found the studs were damaged after Lee bought unsuitable things for the bathroom, and he had to take things out of the kitchen underneath.

“I think it was something he really wanted me to do was re-model my kitchen and then one day we walked in and the kitchen was gone from ceiling to flooring to cupboards,” says Lee.

“Mr. Johnson has been a reputable contractor for over 34 years. During that period of time he has never had a complaint filed against him,” says defense attorney Richard Milgrub.

Lee says they did not have a written contract for work on the First St. home and she only got one receipt.

“It was a verbal thing. It was dealt with on a weekly basis as far as time and material and we settled up on the money,” says Johnson.

“I think what happened was there just just maybe some type of miscommunication somewhere along the line,” says Lee.

Lee says she’s spent $45,000, plus more money to hire a second contractor to fix the bathroom, which she still has to paint.

Milgrub says the case was re-scheduled so the prosecution can look at the new documents that Johnson presented and decide whether or not to continue with the case. Lee says she and Johnson were classmates in high school.
