For Brad Weatherwalk, 78 is so much more than just a number.
“You play for the person who wore that number before you did. And that’s what, exactly I’m doing,” Weatherwalk said.
It’s a sign of respect for his Uncle Michael Hook, U.S.. Army soldier who was killed in Iraq in 2007.
Hook along with five other fallen soldiers and Altoona Area High alums will be honored this week beneath the Friday night lights.
Phil Riccio, the Athletic Director for the Altoona Area School District, said it’s important to remember “Those who have served for us and those who have given their lives to protect us and give us everything that we have today.”
The school district, along with the Patriot Riders will honor all six families who will stand at the 50-yard-line for the game’s coin toss.
“The fallen are our heroes because they gave the ultimate sacrifice,” Riccio said.
Hook, like his nephew, also played for the high school and graduated in 2001 before leaving to serve our country.
Henry Weatherwalk, his brother-in-law, said he had a goal and “Always wanted to be a scout sniper, and that’s what he ended up becoming.”
But his life was cut short during a helicopter crash in Iraq.
Nine years later, the community and local vets will salute Hook and five other servicemen who never made it home.
Weatherwalk said he knows his uncle will be there for the season’s opening game–in spirit.
“He’ll be out there watching me and he’ll be cheering on my name even though he’s not here,” Weatherwalk said.
Riccio said he coached Hook when Altoona Area High won their most recent championship and honoring him is an extra privilege.
