The Martha & Mary House in Johnstown is planning an open house on March 7th, to mark its 2nd anniversary.

They’re inviting state representatives, community members and past residents to spread the word about the impact the shelter can have.

The Martha & Mary House can house up to 15 people for a maximum of 30 days. People who stay at the shelter must live in Cambria County and can’t have a violent criminal history and can’t be active drug users.

Workers at the shelter help the guests get back on their feet: helping them look for jobs, housing and providing them with mental health and drug and alcohol addiction resources.

One man who’s been at the shelter for two days is recovering from an opioid addiction. He said after his mother passed away, if it weren’t for the Martha & Mary House, he would have ended up living underneath a bridge.

“I’d like to say I have a job tomorrow and a place the following day, but I just keep working at it. They’re not here to do the work for you, but they are here to point you in the right direction so you can do the work yourself,” said Brandon Reed, who is staying at the Martha & Mary House.

Workers at the shelter said people often underestimate the need in this area and they want to educate the community more about how they can help, by donating goods, money and volunteering.
