Three Baton Rouge officers are confirmed dead after a Sunday morning shooting at the intersection of Airline Drive and Old Hammond Highway.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department and East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, two police officers and one deputy were killed in the attack.

The law enforcement officers have been identified as: Officer Montrell Jackson, 32, of Baton Rouge; Officer Matthew Gerald, 41, of Denham Springs; and Deputy Brad Garafola, 45.

Jackson had served with BRPD for a decade, and Gerald was still in his first year with the force. Garafola served 24 years with the Sheriff’s Office and was also a former marine.

Two other deputies were shot. They have been identified as Deputy Nicholas Tullier, 41, and Deputy Bruce Simmons, 51. Tullier remains in critical condition. Simmons is expected to recover with non life-threatening injuries.

Montrell Jackson’s uncle Fred Jackson is a former football coach at Michigan and Josh Jackson, quarterback at Virginia Tech, is Montrell’s cousin.

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as Gavin Eugene Long, 29, of Kansas City. Authorities have converged on his home. Reports have surfaced Long is a former Marine. He allegedly used armor piercing rounds on officers. The shooter is believed to have committed the deadly acts on his birthday.

The Associated Press has reported two “persons of interest” have been detained in connection with the killings, however, Long is believed to be the lone shooter.
