MANSFIELD, Ohio (WCMH) — Kentucky State Police confirm Skylar Williams, the student abducted at gunpoint from the OSU Mansfield campus late Monday morning, and the alleged abductor Ty’rell Pounds, both died Monday after a multi-county chase ended in an officer-involved shooting in Kentucky.

According to an Ohio State public safety notice, Williams was standing in a parking lot on campus when she was approached by Ty’rell Pounds. Police said Pounds displayed a handgun and forced her into a minivan.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol could not confirm the current status of the relationship between Pounds and Williams, but said the two had a child together.

NBC4’s Tyler Carter spoke to Williams’ grandmother Tuesday. 

“She’s gone, she’s gone,” she said.

Monday afternoon, law enforcement in Kentucky responded to a 911 call reporting a person in distress at a gas station in Gallatin County. 

NBC4 spoke to Gallatin County Sheriff Josh Neale. He told us he received a call at 3:14 p.m. from a witness reporting a woman inside a gas station that whispered “help me” then mouthed the words again in the parking lot. Neal tells us the witness tried to confront the driver of the car and told them to stop, but the vehicle took off. 

“Female attempted to escape from the vehicle — black male pulled her back into the car,” an Oldham County dispatcher said, WAVE 3 reported. “He is possibly armed.”

Kentucky State Police (KSP) received the call from Gallatin County dispatch around 3:24 p.m. Troopers located the suspect vehicle along I-71 S in Henry County and tried to pull the driver over to see if they needed help.

KSP says the vehicle failed to stop and continued southbound. Troopers attempted to use stop sticks but were unsuccessful. Once the pursuit entered Oldham County, KSP troopers and other law enforcement agencies positioned themselves at the Exit 14 ramp.

The suspect exited the interstate at that ramp, then crossed Highway 329, attempting to reenter the interstate. 

“Due to public safety concerns, the primary KSP pursuit unit performed a legal intervention stop to prevent the suspect’s vehicle from re-entering the highway. After the vehicle came to rest on the ramp, the trooper attempted to apprehend the suspect,” the release from KSP states.

According to KSP, the trooper heard a gunshot coming from inside the vehicle, which he perceived as an immediate deadly threat to himself and the female passenger. KSP says the trooper drew his service weapon and fired; the suspect was struck, resulting in his death at the scene. 

KSP says Williams was struck by at least one round of gunfire, then transported to the University of Louisville Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
