DUBOIS, Pa. (WTAJ)– A fitness center in Clearfield County is thanking first responders by helping them stay in shape.

WPAL Fitness Center in DuBois is now offering free gym memberships to first responders, military members and veterans.

“We know that these people work long hours, they make sacrifices with their families, and other parts of their lives to help us every day,” WPAL executive director Aaron Beatty said. “It can be a thankless job and what we wanted to do was be thankful and show our appreciation.”

Since first responders have different schedules, the gym will soon be open 24/7.

“So now these first responders that work crazy hours for second, third shift, and it’s always changing,” Beatty said. “They’ll now be able to access the gym before the shift, after their shift, whatever fits their schedules.”

The fitness center has always offered free memberships to law enforcement and kids ages 6 to 18.

In exchange for a free membership, Beatty said he hopes that the adult members would provide mentorship to the kids.

“They’re able to help us out with what our goal is, and that’s to make an impact on the youth in the area,” Beatty said.

City of DuBois Fire Chief Joe Mitchell said that the free memberships are a great way for his department, and other responders, to stay fit for the job.

“We do a lot of high-adrenaline jobs, a lot of heavy lifting, standing for a long period of time, heat and cold, I think it’s important for people to stay fit and I think that’s another opportunity for that to happen,” Mitchell said.
