Logan Township Police Department’s K-9 officer works hard protecting the community.

“You can’t put a value on exactly how important he is to us,” Logan Township Chief of Police Timothy Mercer said.

However, the curious, brave, and active German Shepherd hasn’t been himself lately.

“Unexpectedly Vilo became ill and we took him to the vet and they did some x-rays and found he had cancer on his spleen so they did emergency surgery,” Chief Mercer told us.

In the last 10-years, Vilo has used his keen senses to help detect drugs and track down criminals.

Although he loves his job, it’s time to retire. So the tables have turned a bit and Vilo now needs your help raising money for his replacement. Operation Our Town is collecting donations.

“This drug dog can help not only with regular patrol, but they also use it within school districts to do drug searches,” Executive coordinator for Operation Our Town said. “It’s a really good resource for Blair county to have.”

Vilo will never be forgotten, but it’s now up to a new K-9 officer to carry on his legacy.

“We all want a safe community and a police dog, with their heightened senses, has the ability to drastically improve policing,” Chief Mercer said.

The Logan Township Police Department hopes to have a new K-9 trained by November.
