St. Francis University held it’s alumni weekend July 28 through the 30, and used it as a chance to highlight the school’s charity ride.

For the seventh year in a row, Brother Shamus McGrenra will bike 1,000 miles through 10 states to raise money for the Dorothy Day Center at the university. The center provides food and necessities to those in poverty.

Brother Shamus is 70 years old and is a stage four colon cancer survivor.

“It has made an impact on the individuals on the area and on the community in general,” McGrenra said. “So, that’s what give me inspiration and then obviously helping out those that have had a diagnosis of cancer. So it’s a combination of both.”

The goal of this year’s ride is to raise $45,000 and it all gets underway on Friday, September 8.
