Volunteers in Johnstown, a city devastated by three floods, are collecting supplies for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Aaron Korenoski, a truck driver for MJ Daniels Trucking, started the donation drive. Born and raised in “Flood City,” he knows how devastating natural disasters can be. He volunteered to collect donations and drive 1500 miles down to Texas to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.
“You have to get out and do things. You can’t just talk about it. You have to step up and you have to help people,” Korenoski said.
His mother, Jayne, works for the Greater Johnstown/Cambria County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Employees are collecting donations of non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, diapers, blankets and two tractor-trailers full of water.
“We’ve gotten so many e-mails from people in Houston that are thanking us for the supplies. They need them desperately,” said Jayne Korenoski,
It will take five 18-wheelers to take all the donations to Texas. They may need more trucks depending on donations from schools, sports teams and businesses in the area.
“If there’s any doubt about good people here, this proves it,” Aaron said.
Supplies will be collected at different locations all over Cambria County until September 8th, when the truck drivers will hit the road to bring some relief – and hope – to the people of Houston.
“It will get better. You have to just keep moving on and take what help you can get and just run with it. They’ll rebuild. It will come back,” Aaron said.
A send-off for the drivers is planned for Friday, September 8 from 10 a.m. to noon on Johns Street by Point Stadium.
