A special wheelchair is helping disabled military and first responders enjoy the outdoors and giving them a sense of freedom and independence.

Wings for Our Heroes provides outdoor activities to veterans and first responders injured in the line of duty, like clay pigeon shooting and pheasant hunting. The non-profit started two years ago. This year, they raised enough money to buy a second adaptive wheelchair.

“By us giving this little bit back, it’s nothing compared to what they gave to us,” said Mike Steele, the founder of Wings for Our Heroes.

Doug Reighard likes to hunt, but ever since he was injured while serving in the U.S. Air Force, he said it’s been hard to keep up.

“I actually injured my neck. Broke my neck and busted my lower back. So, it’s hard to go distance walking. Standing too long, sitting too long,” Reighard said.

Doug’s wife, Jackie, and son, CJ, watched as Doug shot clay pigeons on Monday.

“It’s freeing for him to be able to get out and participate,” said Jackie.

Jackie and Doug hope their son CJ, will hunt alongside his dad someday.

“It would be really good to see. Our son’s 3-and-a half so he’s got a couple years before he could do it. But to be able to look forward to getting out and doing those things, it would be really nice to see,” Jackie said.

Doug said his dream can be a reality, with help from Wings for Our Heroes.

“To go from not being able to walk on a hunt to having my son be able to go with me. At least we can come out here and go bird hunting, like a normal father and son,” Doug said.

Any veteran or first responder injured in the line of duty can apply to go on a free hunt with Wings for Our Heroes. Find out how by visiting their website.
