Pennsylvania still leads the nation in the number of  Lyme disease cases and that’s a problem that not only for humans , but also for their canine family members. Just a week ago, a local pediatrician told WTAJ she sees at least one case of Lyme disease every week. On Wednesday, we  heard the same thing from an Altoona veterinarian.

Strangely enough, in some ways, it may be easier to protect your pets than it is your children.

At Pleasant Valley Animal Hospital, Dr. Matt Stachmus says, “Lyme disease, is a very bid deal. It’s a common disease we see in pets. It’s also common in people. It’s very debilitating, but that being said, it’s also very preventable.”

Dr. Stachmus says while there isn’t a good Lyme vaccine for humans, there is one for pets. Also, tablets, like Bravecto or collars like Seresto brand  can protect animals from other diseases carried by ticks.

How safe are those pesticides?

“In the state of Pennsylvania where Lyme disease is endemic and we have one of the basically highest incidence of the disease, you’re taking a much greater risk not  protecting your pet than by not using an approved insecticide to protect your pet.

He says antibiotics can effectively treat  Lyme disease, but if it’s not caught early permanent damage and even death can result. Again, he says, that’s why prevention is so important.

Dr. Stachmus says it’s important to examine your pets regularly for ticks, but admits that it can be difficult to spot ticks through animal fur, plus the pests can hid in the ears and other places.
