The 90-degree days in Centre County have residents finding creative ways to stay cool.

Jane Taylor, a resident, loves to exercise but takes her workouts inside at the Centre Region Active Adult Center.

“It’s great,” Taylor said. “I wouldn’t exercise if I had to go out in the heat so it’s been good for my overall health.”

But if you cannot stay away from the outdoors, make sure to pack your sunscreen!

‘When it comes to sunscreen, we recommend at least SPF, up to 50,” Dr. Adela Germano, a resident with Mount Nittany Medical Center said. “Reapply every 2 hours no matter what, reapply after coming out of the water and apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside because it needs time to take effect.”

Hot weather is also a lot riskier for older people — many of them suffer from congestive heart failure and breathing issues that can get worse in these high temperatures.

So if you don’t have air conditioning, there are six senior centers in Centre County you can go to cool down like the Centre Region Active Adult Center and the Bellefonte Senior Center. The Centre County Office of Aging is also a strong resource.
