Loretto, Pa. – Margretta Dry of the Canisius women’s soccer team (1-0) scored 53 seconds into the first overtime period to lift the Golden Griffins over Saint Francis (0-1-1) 3-2 on Sunday in SFU’s home opener.
Highlights
- Canisius opened the scoring in the 11th minute off the foot of Paige Buscaglia. The forward received the ball facing away from goal before turning and finishing inside the near post.
- Junior Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) picked up where she left off in 2017 with her first three points of the season. She tied the game in the 13th minute, out-dueling a Golden Griffin defender before turning the edge and sending a shot past a cheating Canisius keeper.
- Buscaglia netted her second of the match in the 20th minute to send Canisius in front at the half, 2-1.
- Sophomore Sam Jankowski (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia Area) made an immediate impact upon insertion into the game and she was rewarded with her first career goal just over two minutes into the second half. Sophomore Emilee Barnett (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) started the play by spraying a ball wide to McGhee. The winger cut in and found a wide open Jankowski who took her first touch to goal and scored on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
- Sophomore Morgan O’Loughlin (Downington, Pa./Downington West) replaced redshirt junior Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) in goal at the half and was pressed into immediate action. She stopped a Buscaglia bid from the top of the box in the 65th minute with a redirect over the bar.
- Saint Francis nearly went in front moments later. Sophomore Mariana Jaleca (Sebtubal, Portugal/) sent a corner kick to the back post which was headed off the crossbar by senior Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus).
- O’Loughlin made another key save in the 83rd minute, springing to her left to tip over a shot from distance.
- Dry won the contest in overtime, heading in a cross from Alicia Larsson Vahlberg from 10 yards out.
Inside the Numbers
- Shots tilted in Canisius’s favor 14-12, but SFU outshot the Golden Griffins 7-4 in the second half.
- Shots on goal were 9-3 in favor of Canisius.
- Each team drew five corner kicks a piece.
