Drug addicts in Somerset County have a new treatment program with the assistance of police.

A training was held Monday at the Somerset Borough Police Department. It’s part of the LEAD program, which stands for Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion.

The goal of the program is to help non-violent drug addicts get into a treatment bed immediately. Anyone in Somerset County can turn themselves into police anytime, even with drugs on them, and they won’t be charged.

“They’re trying to serve their community and they’re doing a great job by opening up the police departments by helping people who really need help,” said Robert Reed, Executive Deputy Attorney General.

Law enforcement says the program will help addicts, save lives and reduce the number of people in the Criminal Justice System.
