A special delivery is feeding families in need in Johnstown.

The Produce to People program gives fresh produce to families who can’t afford it.

Wednesday morning, volunteers from Flood City Church and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distributed food like oranges, apples, cabbage and peppers. Students from Divine Mercy Catholic Academy also volunteered.

Every month, dozens of volunteers help feed about 750 families in the greater Johnstown area.

“It’s amazing. I started doing this about five years ago. I started going to hunger meetings and knew that there was a need in our community,” said Renée George, a Flood City Church volunteer who runs the program in Johnstown. “Maybe it’s just a one-time. Maybe your job has ended and you need to get through the month. Maybe you go to the pantry and there’s never anything fresh, so we’re able to provide that for everybody.”

Produce to People runs the first Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Greater Johnstown Career & Technology Center on 445 Schoolhouse Road in Johnstown.

Anyone can show up to get free, fresh produce.
