Bedford County officials say they’ve identified human remains found last month off Route 30.

A little over two weeks ago, the county coroner and district attorney called a news conference to  ask for help identifying the person whose remains were discovered. On Tuesday, they revealed that  they received key information,  in an anonymous phone call less than two hours after their plea.

An EMS worker remembered transporting a man from route 30 in Snake Spring Township to UPMC Bedford. There, he was treated for fatigue, dehydration, and leg pain, and then released. The patient matched the description of the man whose remains were found, and the time period—September 2013, fit, as well.

Authorities got the man’s name and next of kin information from the hospital and contacted his family.
Then, a DNA  match confirmed that the man was 47-year-old Robert Cochran from Canajoharie New York.

Coroner Russell Styer says there was no trauma to the bones and the cause of death is being listed as “could not be determined.”

State police say Cochran had been walking from New York to Pennsylvania when he went missing. He’d left a note that was several pages long, at his home, saying he needed to get away.
