Brady Township and DuBois officials spoke out against a proposed injection well.

The EPA already approved the well off Highland Avenue Extension.

DEP says they’re not required to hold a hearing, but did so tonight at Penn State DuBois because of public interest. More than 80 people showed up.

Brady Township Supervisor Charles Muth said he was concerned about leaks and supposed “plugged” wells in the area, and asked the company to put up a bond.

“It’s in a residential area and it’s only 897 feet away from our water well and a lot of other people have water wells that are even closer to it than that, so we’re concerned about our water wells staying pure and clean because we’ve had good water,” says upset resident Marianne Atkinson.

DuBois councilwoman Diane Bernardo testified for the city that four new city water wells are only a few miles away, and that there’s a fault line and old mines nearby.

DEP community relations coordinator John Poister told us there are 8 injection wells in the state, 2 more pending, and there’s no timeline for a decision.

Poister said at the beginning of the meeting that written comments must be submitted by next Monday at 4 p.m.

The comment submission information is: DEP, Southwest Oil & Gas District, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or tdonohue@pa.gov or fax 412-442-4328.
