BEDFORD, Pa. (WTAJ) — A unique escape room is coming to Bedford to teach young adults about the dangers of addiction.

Folks at Freedom House Ministries said they wanted to raise some money for their facility and start a conversation about addiction and recovery.

“There are very few families in our region where you would be able to talk to them and not find a family that has been touched by having a loved one that has struggled with either substance abuse problem or addiction,” Melissa Jacobs, Board member for Freedom House Ministries, said.

The escape room takes place in the bedroom of Billy, a young man in the early stages of recovery. The goal isn’t to leave the room, but to use some of Billy’s tools to save one of their friends because before the group enters the escape room, one volunteer is blindfolded and handcuffed.

Then, their friends have under an hour to go through the room to find clues, eventually leading them to the key to unlock them.

“Hopefully, they’ll walk out of here with a few more tools on how to handle addiction,” April Caylor, Board member for Freedom House Ministries, said.

After the escape room, the group talks with a local pastor about their experiences and what they learned about the recovery process.

At the end, each person makes a hope bracelet, reminding them about healthy choices, options, prayer, and education.

“If we can just reach one person and prevent any other losses, it’s well worth it,” Jacobs said.

The activity is meant for teens, 13 and up. If you want to come and try out the escape room, you can go online to freedom house ministries’ website to book a day and time. The rate is $200 for a group of 10 kids and two adults, but if smaller groups are interested, the fees can be shared with another small group.
