As part of the Thunder in the Valley festivities, Wheels and Wings was Thursday night in Ebensburg.

With 16 restaurants in the wing contest, the competition was tough.  This year’s winner was Hubcaps Pizza from Patton and they say it’s all about the sauce.

Richie Wertz, the owner of Hubcaps, said, “You have to have a good sauce flavor.  We just did a mild garlic butter sauce this year and they seemed to really like it.  I finally hit their palate right.”

Hubcaps Pizza has been a contender for four years.  But this year, they finally bring home the title of best wings.  “It’s pretty exciting, you know, like I said I won the spirit award a couple of times, but actually winning the big prize is cool,” said Wertz.

This year’s spirit award went to Our Place Pizza & Pub from Colver who created their own sauce for the event — and said they sold 1,000 lbs of wings in five hours.  They were just one of many booths that saw lines all night long.

Tina Hines, who lives in Ebensburg, said, “I love Wheels and Wings.  It is the best event in Ebensburg, we have so much fun here.  Everybody comes out and we have a great time.”

And for those not only interested in the wings, there were 250 cars, trucks or motorcycles registered for the show.  They had several different categories where drivers could win prizes.

Cruz Brennen, Culver resident said, “I’ve been coming every year.  I like seeing the cars, bikes, it’s a great time.  I just love the whole community event.”

The organizers say they’re happy to see so many folks outside and having fun.

“It’s the people its getting together, its everything about being in Ebensburg, its a great time,” said Hines.
